WELCOME,
To the Kashia Band of Pomo Indians Language Website, this site was created for Kashia Tribal Members to visit and learn the Kashia language. Our goal is to increase Tribal Member’s knowledge of the Kashia language, history and culture by providing educational tools for adults and children.

This project which was made possible through a grant from the Administration for Native Americans of the Department of Health and Human Services, will help lay the groundwork for the continued education of multiple generations of Tribal Members for years to come.

Our hope is that this website will be used by fluent Kashia speakers to interact with non-kashia speaking members to aid in teaching the language in their homes, at tribal meetings, and to the larger community.

This website is designed to enhance the work which was began by Dr. Robert L. Oswalt which began in the 1950’s, who worked primarily with Kashia Spiritual Leader Essie Parrish to record and develop a written language for the Kashia people. Using audio and visual tools, we hope to build a multi-media experience to teach the Kashia language.

“If we do not know our language the who are we? The language is a self identity thing, that is who we are. Without our language we can not call ourselves Kashia people anymore.” Violet Chappell – Kashia Elder and fluent speaker.
